Warmth. Beauty. Invitation. The lobby space of the Calgary Marriott Downtown is a space designed to indulge the senses.  Beckoning travelers out of their rooms to lounge by the fire, and business locals indoors to collaborate and catch up, this fully licensed lobby space encourages gathering and relaxed conversation.  The large fireplace and artsy lighting add grace and elegance, with dark wood accents adding warmth to the inviting ambiance.  With easy access to the Telus Convention Center and complimentary wi-fi, this space is much more than your average lobby, it is a functioning heart of the hotel.

ONE18 EMPIRE

Goat Cheese Cheesecake, One18 Empire, Calgary Marriott Downtown, Alberta, Canada

Upscale. Delicious. “Old Fashioned”.  The Marriott’s pride and joy, One18 Empire is a whisk(e)y-inspired bar and restaurant that challenges the perception of hotel dining and elevates the downtown culinary experience.  Newly added to the hotel with the redesign, this eye catching space is the place to gather for not only guests but locals as well, as it humbly celebrates being noted as a top 10 restaurant in the city.  Paying homage to a rich local history, One18 Empire offers locally inspired dishes for breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner and late night dining.  With over 100 whisk(e)ys, ryes, bourbons and scotches as well as tailored cocktails and a selection of wines and craft beers, there is something for everyone.  Those looking to host an exceptional tasting affair will enjoy gathering in the ‘McTavish Dining Room’, a private space for groups up to 14.

OUR MUST TRY:  Even if you are not a whiskey drinker, the production of making an “Old Fashioned” is worth the drink itself, and dessert lovers be prepared to have your sweet tooth game changed by the Goat Cheese Cheesecake (pictured above)

THE ROOMS

Double Room, Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Spacious. Comfortable. Detailed.  With the building based on a “hollow square” concept, every room of the Calgary Marriott enjoys a close proximity to the elevators as well as a stunning downtown view.  The beautifully redesigned rooms that range from Suites, Executive King (Corner), King and Double Rooms are extremely spacious, tastefully decorated in a warm aesthetic mix, and very well lit with both large windows and perfection in bathroom lighting.

The thought process of the redesign and the attention to detail stands out in each element of the room.  An artistic mountain landscape adorns the main wall to bring about a true Alberta feel, highlighting the city’s location.  Couches with throw pillows add a cozy touch to the ‘home away from home’. Netflix can be found on the large screen tv and electronics can be charged in multiple stations.  Business travelers will enjoy the added touches of additional elevated suitcase space, extended desk areas and mobile tables that easily adjust to any working height.

Suite, King Room, Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel

Highlights:  Elevators require electronic room key access for added security.  All rooms enjoy large screen HD tv’s with Netflix access.  There is a complimentary safe, a mini fridge and plenty of charging station space for electronics.  The Mobile App makes check in/out and room keys simple and efficient.

Families looking to book should note:  Rollaway beds are not permitted, and the sofas do not fold out.  King Rooms have stand up showers only and the Double Rooms enjoy a tub/shower combination.

THE AMENITIES

A major draw for travelers are the amenities, a perfect space for both families and business travelers to relax and unwind or sweat and splash.  The two-level gym boasts state of the art equipment, as well as a hydration station with items such as complimentary cold towels, water, fruit and ear buds.  The pool is the perfect size and depth for families to splash and play, and the hot tub and outdoor summer patio space enjoy views of downtown and the Calgary Tower.

THE ART

Wandering the hallways of the second floor (meeting rooms and M Lounge level) is a treat for anyone who appreciates creative talent.  It is a unique element of the hotel as the Calgary Marriott Downtown proudly displays and promotes the work of local artists.  From vibrant 3D paintings to abstract and locally inspired scenes, the talent presented is absolutely incredible, and is available to purchase for your own collection.

While an upgrade to M Club Class during our stay was sponsored by the hotel, the above opinions and words are as always, my own.  To each of the staff we came across, the ones who ensured our stay was nothing short of perfection, the ones who greeted us so warmly and shared conversations (and chocolates!), our most heartfelt gratitude goes to you.  To the staff of One18 Empire, hats off, you guys not only know your stuff, you present it like no other. And to the chef, that charcuterie board and cheesecake are everything, do you deliver to Edmonton? To Kristina, you are a gem, and the time you took to speak with me and give me such a fantastic tour, is so very much appreciated.  We look forward to returning to such a spectacular hotel in one of our favorite cities.

Cheers,

Amy

  1. Mariott always looks nice but this one in Calgary looks exquisite. I definitely judge a hotel by the food they serve and the dishes at One18 Empire are to die for! All that along with a nice pool and hot tub, where do I sign up! Oh wait I gotta be in Calgary to stay here 🙁

  2. We are heading to Calgary in September before we road trip through the Rockies. We are looking for a place to stay – will have to check out this place out. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Excellent review. From the amenities to the spacious rooms, this looks like a lovely place to stay for both business and pleasure. I’d especially enjoy winding down the evening in the whisky bar 🙂

  4. wow what a great review and you can tell by the pictures its not word of a lie! You don’t even need to leave your hotel!!! Everything looks so elegant and top notch. That food platter and whisky bar… wow!

  5. The restaurant looks – and sounds – very nice. Since I hardly do more than sleep at a hotel room when travelling, I don’t care to much for luxury; as long as it’s more or less comfy and definitely clean, I don’t need much more than a good bed.

    1. The restaurant is amazing! And the hotel isn’t about staying in luxury. We do our fair share of staying in all different types of accommodations, but this hotel was absolutely perfect for a downtown Calgary experience. It was the service and details that truly set it apart.

  6. This place looks super nice! The pictures really do this place justice (and then some). I can’t personally imagine spending too much time in any hotel to fully enjoy all the amenities (the adventure for me is outside!) I enjoy my tent the outdoors, but who knows? Maybe I would stay here one day. Surely my partner would like to explore Calgary, Alberta.

    1. Well we love adventure and do our fair share of camping, but while exploring the city, this is a favorite for sure. We were here for our daughters competition, so were in the hotel more than usual….and it was a treat in this one, for sure! It was simply effortless and the valet made going in and out so often a breeze (and a warm one at that!)

  7. Marriots are always so fancy and look so comfortable! I’d probably want to go take a dip in the pool or spend hours in the jacuzzi. Not sure I’d make it to the gym although I would for sure make it a goal haha.

    1. The jacuzzi has such a great view! I am not a “gym while traveling” girl, but love that it has the option for those who want to get a workout in. The hubby is way better at staying on track than I am, I’m usually trying out the food!

  8. The Calgary Marriott looks so so good! I don’t often just hang in a hotel when travelling but I’d be so tempted here, because it seems like such a treat! You’ll find me enjoying that hot tub…

    1. Thanks for taking the time to stop in! This is definitely the epitome of a downtown stay! Not only location wise, but to see that tower or Stephen Avenue view out your window is pretty special!
